About ToolThrone
ToolThrone exists because small-business tool reviews have a trust problem: most are written by people who never opened the product, ranked by whoever pays the highest commission. We do the opposite. Every tool we cover gets opened with our own account, run against live work — real keyword research, real listing drafts, real client workflows — and scored on the same weighted rubric whether it has an affiliate program or not.
We focus on tools where the decision actually matters and the research is thin: Etsy research and listing tools, and the CRMs that run service businesses. Small niches, honestly covered, beat broad directories covered badly.
How We Test & Score
Every review follows the same five-step process:
- 1. Hands-on trial with our own account. Free trials get used for their full length where possible. We don't review from feature lists or other people's screenshots.
- 2. Real workloads. Etsy tools get tested across three product niches with cross-checks against competitor data; CRM tools get a full client cycle — inquiry, proposal, contract, invoice, automation.
- 3. Pricing verified at source. Every price on this site was checked on the vendor's official pricing page on the review's update date. Prices drift; each page carries its verification date.
- 4. One weighted rubric. All tools in a category are scored on the same dimensions with the same weights, so scores are comparable across reviews and guides.
- 5. A verdict you can act on. Every review states who should buy, who should skip, and what the honest alternative is — including the free one when it wins.
The rubric
| Dimension | Weight | What we measure |
|---|---|---|
| Core capability | 30% | The job the tool is bought for: keyword data depth, automation power, generation quality |
| Price | 20% | Entry cost vs category, free-tier value, total cost at real volumes |
| Ease of use | 20% | Time to first result, interface friction, mobile experience |
| Feature completeness | 15% | How much of the adjacent workflow is covered without add-ons |
| Learning curve | 15% | Setup cost before the tool pays for itself |
Dimension names adapt to the category (a CRM's "core capability" is workflow automation; an Etsy tool's is keyword data), but the 30/20/20/15/15 structure never changes. The Arena runs on these same scores — a battle result and a review table can never disagree here.
Update Policy
- Every page shows its last-updated date and what was verified on that date.
- Pricing pages and pricing claims get re-checked quarterly, or immediately when a vendor announces a change.
- When a tool ships a major version (like Dubsado 3.0), the review gets re-tested rather than patched with a note.
- Found something stale or wrong? Tell us — corrections ship fast and get credit.
Affiliate Disclosure
rel="sponsored" in the page source. If you sign up for a tool through one of them, we may earn a commission from the vendor — at no extra cost to you. This is how the site pays for trials, hosting and the time it takes to test properly.
Three commitments that make those links safe to click:
- Commissions never change scores, picks or rankings. Tools with no affiliate program (like ChatGPT in our listing generator guide) get ranked exactly like those that pay.
- Every affiliate page says so, up top. The disclosure appears before the first recommendation, not buried in the footer.
- We recommend free tiers when they win. Several of our top picks across the site cost $0 — that's the point of scoring free plans seriously.
Editorial Independence
No vendor reviews our content before publication. No vendor can buy a placement, a score or an "editor's choice" badge — those aren't for sale because they're earned by the rubric. Sponsored content, if it ever appears, will be labeled as such and kept out of review and ranking pages entirely. When we're wrong, we'd rather correct it in public than quietly edit it away.
